Frequently Asked Questions
Can you describe a typical school day?
Students will arrive and check in at the student kiosk using their student IDs. Our new format provides flexibility as students can arrive at their own time. Classes will be open from 8am to 4pm on Monday through Friday.
Students will each have their own assigned laptops loaded with their personalized class schedule. Students will have the choice of over 300 classes ranging from core classes to dynamic, exciting classes such as Fashion, Game Design, Veterinary Science, Criminology, Medical Studies and much more. Included in the class list are 10 Advanced Placement classes and 13 dual credit classes. This will give every student the ability to fully customize their class load.
Fluid classrooms will give students the ability to spend as long as they need in any one core subject classroom. This enables students to move through course work at their pace and are free to go to the next class of their choice. Students that need extra time and attention are free to stay in the core class as long as they need to accomplish the task of the day.
To encourage student to explore art, the current GLCA Art room will evolve into a art studio. In addition to that, a media suite will be installed over the summer. Students will have access to these creative areas once they have completed the days workload or just need a break from class work. We want to encourage creativity and unlock God-given potential in these areas.
Students will be free to leave campus daily once their course work is completed. This will give families greater flexibility and students time to pursue other talents, internships, and interests. No longer will students be in boring classrooms waiting on the entire class periods to end or other students to finish their work.
Friday each week will be optional for students that are on target with their classes. This will place success and freedom in the hands of our students.
How will GLCA teachers teach?
Most of the teaching will be one to one or in small groups to ensure student needs are being met. On occasion, large group lectures will occur.
How will teachers connect with students daily / weekly?
On a daily basis, teachers will instruct students and be present after instruction time to answer questions. This will help students achieve success.
Once a week, students will be required to meet one on one with a teacher from each educational department. This will ensure students are receiving strong feedback on their class performance. Options will be provided for the specific teacher they meet with on a weekly basis to help eliminate personality conflicts in the classroom.
Each month, students will meet with an on-site counselor to address emotional growth outside of the educational scope.
Additionally students will be required to meet with one of our four academic advisors bi-monthly.
Will my child be taught by a computer?
No they will not. Edgenuity is a learning platform just like a McGraw Hill text book is a learning platform. The class content will be taught in several different ways to your child.
1. Our GLCA teaching staff will conduct one on one or small groups teachings daily in classrooms. This will ensure time for questions and ensure student needs are being met at whatever level they are at.
2. The Edgenuity online platform also comes with pre-recorded lessons taught by a highly qualified teacher. This will give students the ability to watch lessons as many times as needed for them to master the concept on their own time or during daily classes.
What is Blended Learning?
Blended learning is the combination of face-to-face instruction, technology, and data to increase personalization, engagement, and mastery of essential skills. A blended learning classroom is a student-centered learning environment where students have some control over the pace, time, path, and place of their learning.
In short, blended learning integrates online content and instruction with traditional classroom teaching and experiences.
